It all began with a simple question: What if we could make New Zealand natural stone a viable choice for more spaces, more projects, and more people? Find out how we made it happen.
Project notes
Stone from different quarries was blended to specification. The pointed finish unifies the varying colour, texture and shape of the two schists.
Achieving a bespoke 50/50 blend of Te Kuiti Grey + Two-tone limestone required careful stone selection and processing — and no less care in the laying.
Delivering local schist at the scale and finish standard of an international hotel brand is a different proposition to residential projects. No easy feat.
Colour-matched mortar, mixed in the traditional way, keeps the eye on the stone rather than the joint — a seemingly small decision with a big impact.
Tapered columns demanded that every stone is individually dressed to profile. The tighter the taper, the more the craft shows — and here it shows well.
Stone coursing passed through the glazing line, connecting interior and exterior walls - a detail that looks effortless and is anything but.
Lightweight stone cladding was the right call here — reducing structural load without compromising the visual weight of the installation.
The same stone served as both sill and lintel — a detail that references Arrowtown's historic masonry tradition requiring skilled masonry to deliver.
