Stone with
a story.

We’ve spent 20+ years making NZ natural stone easier to choose and easier to use.

Where it all began

The Natural Stone Co began with a simple question: What if we could make New Zealand stone possible?

And by possible, we mean a viable option for more spaces, projects, and people. Because, while solid stone masonry works for some projects, it’s not always practical. Yet, the demand for genuine local stone is strong.

The question was simple. But like all good stories, finding the answer took some doing.

The story so far

The idea first took shape in Central Otago, where Peter grew up among the hills and riverbeds that first connected him to New Zealand’s unique landscape.

During a family, Peter sourced some local schist and set up a makeshift cutting station at his parents' whitebaiting bach in Southland — testing whether a lightweight cladding solution was possible.

Those early experiments evolved into two years of careful development and testing before the company’s first lightweight stone cladding product reached the market.

The real test came early – supplying over 3000M2 of schist cladding for Queenstown’s Hilton Hotel proved the concept at scale and established the foundation for what would follow.

An architect’s request for a New Zealand stone cladding in warm tones and organic shapes set the team searching. The Te Kuiti limestone project was the genesis of another NZ stone range.

Fast forward to today – the team has grown along with our New Zealand stone offering. And with it, our combined knowledge and experience, matched by our love of doing innovative things with local stone.

Our team

Knowledgeable, experienced and genuinely passionate about New Zealand natural stone. That about sums up the team here at The Natural Stone Co.

With 20+ years in business, hundreds of projects and tens of thousands of metres of stone cladding installed, we’re proud of what we’ve learned and happy to share it freely.

See where NZ stone comes from

For us, connection goes beyond the stone. We know our quarry operators by name, visit them regularly (often with customers in tow) and understand how each stone is formed and shaped by its region. But it doesn’t stop there. Our relationships carry right through from the people who extract the stone to the masons who install it.

See our work
2/7

Explore your options

We’ll talk you through stone types and lay styles, and send samples so you can see the colour, texture and variation firsthand.

We’ll also share installation images so you can see how lay styles and mortar colours change the finished look. For large projects, we can build a sample panel to show the total design concept.

3/7

Confirm the scope

We work out the quantities for your project and give you comprehensive pricing, so you know what to expect before anything begins.

4/7

Get technical support

We provide drawings, documentation, and specs for consenting and are on hand if any additional information or detailing is required.

5/7

Approve and commission

Once you give us the go-ahead, we procure the raw stone and cut it at one of our processing facilities. We communicate along the way, and as production nears completion, we get in touch to arrange freight to site.

6/7

Connect with installers

We can recommend qualified stone masons in your area or seek installation pricing on your behalf.
